Adventure junkies often tend to think about Hrishikesh and Goa as their favorite water sporting havens. Well, these might be among the most enthralling water sports destinations in India, however, when it comes to God’s Own Country Kerala, it surpasses other destinations on many fronts!

Believe it or not, Kerala is the home to an array of water sports that can make you forget about Rishikesh, Goa or other such destinations. And to bring in more to the thrilling options of water sports in Kerala, here is a list of some of the famous water sports destinations in God’s Own Country:

  • Surfing

For an adrenaline-loving junky who craves to catch the thrill of surfing in Kerala, should plan a trip to Gods Own Country between December and March. It is during this period the water sports enthusiasts can enjoy the cool sea breezes while surfing through the mighty and menacing waves of the Arabian Sea.

Whether a green-horn or an expert, Kerala offers the ideal surfing destination to all types of surfers. While an expert can rent out a surf-board and plunge into the sea, a beginner can enroll in surfing class and learn the basics of surfing. Varkala Beach, Kovalam Beach, Kappil Beach, Poovar, Tiruchindur, and others are some of the most popular surfing destinations in Kerala.

  • Snorkeling

Given the richness and magnitude of its waterbodies, Kerala can be called a paradise for snorkeling! Adorned by the dazzling Arabian Sea and interconnected by a channel of turquoise lagoons and balmy backwaters, it offers quite a few promising snorkeling destinations for those who yearn to discover the magical beauty of aquatic life. Shallow and clear water, rich and exotic marine life, gentle and friendly waves make Kerala a befitting snorkeling destination. For the snorkeling enthusiasts , Kovalam Beach and Varkala Beach are the two most ideal snorkeling destinations in Kerala.

  • Scuba Diving

Untainted by the onslaught of commercialiasation, Kerala is fortunate to keep intact vast swathes of marine life. With so much to experience and discover, it entices scuba divers from across the globe to dive deep into its emerald water and behold its marvelous aquatic life beneath.

In addition to the kaleidoscopic range of underwater life, Kerala also offers several scuba diving training and learning centre to its visitors. With most of these centres being certified by PADI, one can expect a truly exhilarating and refreshing scuba diving experience in God’s Own Country. To note here, destinations like Varkala Beach and Cochin are the most preferred scuba diving destinations in Kerala.

  • Beach Volleyball

Probably everyone’s favorite beach sport, volleyball is a great way to get in some exercise without overheating yourself in the hot sun. It’s easy to set up and even easier to play. The best part is you don’t even have to have a team; plenty of beachgoers would be happy to join in as long as you possess a ball.

  • Beach Football

Much like regular football, beach football is ecstatic indeed because it doesn’t hurt nearly as much to be tackled on sand as it does on solid ground. Of course, if you’re afraid of a little pain you could always play the flag version.

Put a couple of teams together, set up opposing goal lines and you’ve got yourself a game. You’ll probably have to forgo the field goal in this version, but nobody likes that part anyway.

  • Sand Soccer

Playing soccer on the sand is immeasurably more difficult and fun, than playing on a traditional field. The ball has a tendency to fly in crazy directions, get stuck in a dune or end up in the water after a bad kick (bonus points if you can get it out without using your hands!). It’s also much easier to twist your ankle on the beach, so you’d better play with caution!

  • Beach Flags

Beach flags is sort of the sandy equivalent of musical chairs. Someone places a set amount of flags in a row along the beach, but always ensures there is at least one less flag than the number of competitors. Upon the starting signal, racers rush to the flags and try and grab one before anyone else. Those left without a flag are eliminated. This sport tends to get pretty competitive and occasionally a little physical.

  • Beach Handball

If you’ve never seen a game of handball before, it’s essentially soccer without using your feet. Instead, players attempt to throw a ball into the opposing teams goal. On the beach it’s played exactly the same way just with the added difficulty of trying to run in the sand. You can make a goal out of pretty much any two items you have lying around, so place a couple of sand buckets on opposite ends of the playing field and you’re good to go!

Monsoon Tourism

If you want to enjoy monsoon tourism by soaking yourself up in the unabated rains, come to Varkala during the months from June to September. In addition, as the vegetation turns robust in the rains, the place turns green and it offers quite a view. The exponents of Ayurveda always recommend the monsoon seasons as the ideal time for therapeutic treatments and massages prescribed in that school of health care. Being part of the tropics, Varkala otherwise has a mildly hot clime during the rest of the year and it’s a bit scorching in February and March. Yet, the backwaters, forest and beautiful beaches make it an alluring destination for travelers round the year.

Customer Reviews

Simply fantastic place to stay with my family. The rooms are very comfortable as are the grounds. The infinity pool on the coast can't be beat and you practically have your own beach for a 2 minute walk from the gate. Perhaps the best is the food though. It's fresh from the kitchen and cooked with family recipes that you can't get anywhere else. Would 100% recommend!!

Had an awesome time here. The rooms were very spacious and well maintained. The balcony opens up to a wonderful view. Service was really good. The staff were really helpful. Suresh (manager at the property) needs special mention. Food was also good. The beach is at a walkable distance and it's not all crowded. Overall a very satisfying stay at this resort and highly recommended.

We had a very comfortable and relaxed time here! The beach is barely a minute away and in a secluded space it’s almost like a private beach. What needs to be mentioned is how nice and humble Mr. Suresh is as well as his hardworking staff. The food is to die for! Rooms are clean and cozy. Service is impeccable.

The place has amazing views of the beach and the ocean. The rooms are spacious and can accommodate upto 3 in each room. We were allocated the 2 bedroom villa. I personally had a really good time with my constants. During our stay, there was a bunch of others who kept dirtying the pool. The pool was always dirty with mud. I am sure it's the other residents that are to be blamed and not the property management.

Mugilan BaskarRam

It's a beautiful villa and the hospitality was 10/10. There's a pool and a private beach connected to it which makes it even more worth going. And Suresh was a great host to us and made our stay worth going. Would definitely recommend staying here when you visit varkala.

I had gone to clinic to get a consultation. The consultation was free of cost. She explained very well about the various treatments and options for me. I could see the counsellor was very honest. Further, I saw a lot of patients doing their hair transplants there.
